If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the terrifying claims: 50 kids kidnapped in 10 days! 80 missing in a week! A mass abduction crisis in Virginia! The videos are everywhere—TikTok, Facebook, Instagram—racking up millions of views and sparking panic. But here’s the thing: Virginia State Police say none of it is true. There’s no evidence of a mass kidnapping spree, no shadowy kidnapper snatching children off the streets. So what’s really going on? Let’s break it down.

First, the numbers. Yes, kids are reported missing in Virginia—dozens every week, in fact. Between August 3 and August 9, 88 children were logged as missing in the state’s clearinghouse system. That might sound alarming, but it’s actually below Virginia’s 2025 weekly average of 98 missing kids. Since January, over 3,200 children have been reported missing statewide, but only about 4% remain unaccounted for. The vast majority? Runaways who return home within days.

Why the Viral Panic?

The hysteria exploded when TikTok users started stitching together screenshots from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) website, claiming a sudden surge in abductions. Some posts even wove in creepy rumors—like an ice cream truck prowling neighborhoods at night, supposedly luring kids away. But here’s the reality check: Virginia’s numbers look higher than other states because every single missing child case gets reported to NCMEC, something not all states do.

Police have been blunt: There’s no connection between these cases. No kidnapper targeting 12- to 17-year-olds. No coordinated abductions. Just a mix of runaways, custody disputes, and a handful of genuinely mysterious disappearances—like 14-year-old Damonte Pittman Jr., missing since August 4 with little media attention. Social media outrage has also conflated two very different things: AMBER Alerts (for confirmed abductions) and CODI Alerts (for kids missing under suspicious circumstances). Virginia has issued just two AMBER Alerts this year—both resolved safely—and 25 CODI Alerts, all ending with the child found.

The Bigger Picture

So why does it feel like something sinister is happening? Because fear spreads faster than facts. A 16-year-old Fairfax student wrote a viral post asking why “nobody is talking” about 36 missing children in 11 days, noting a 797% spike compared to last year’s daily average. But experts say short-term spikes happen, especially in summer, when teens are out of school, and most cases resolve quickly.

Virginia’s system is actually one of the most transparent in the country. Local police must report missing kids to the state within two hours, and if the case meets strict criteria (like imminent danger), alerts go out. The problem? Runaways rarely qualify. As one commenter put it: “There’s never enough press for missing teenagers because police assume they’re runaways.” And while that’s often true, it doesn’t mean those children are safe. Runaways face huge risks—exploitation, trafficking, violence—which is why advocates push for more awareness, even if the cases aren’t kidnappings.

Bottom line: Stay alert, but don’t panic. Teach your kids safety basics (like avoiding strangers’ cars) and check trusted sources—NCMEC, Virginia State Police—not TikTok horror stories. And if you see a missing child’s poster? Share it. Even if it’s “just” a runaway, that kid still needs help getting home.
