The Weeknd brings After Hours Nightmare to Universal

Those who followed The Weeknd’s After Hours saga will know that the artist veered into a thrilling horror-tinged world through this album. From music videos featuring (fake) decapitations to spooky masks worn by hundreds at The Weeknd’s Super Bowl performance, the album clearly had a sinister aesthetic.

So, when The Weeknd announced that he would be bringing After Hours to Universal this Halloween, it seemed a natural fit.

This is not the first time that the Halloween Horror Nights has been inspired by musicians. Universal once hosted a Black Sabbath-inspired haunted house which went down a treat back in 2013.

The Weeknd calls Halloween Horror Nights a “total dream”

On Tuesday, 26 July 2022, it was announced that Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye would be taking over Universal’s annual haunted house events. Both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort will awaken The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare to the public in this fall.

“I always wanted my own Halloween Horror Nights haunted house, as Halloween has always been significant to my music, so this is a total dream come to life,” The Weeknd told EW.

“I feel like my music videos have served as a launching pad for a collaboration like this, and I cannot wait for people to experience this madness,” he continued to say.

EW also announced that the After Hours Nightmare would be soundtracked by six songs from The Weeknd’s After Hours album: “After Hours,” “In Your Eyes,” “Heartless,” “Blinding Lights,” “Save Your Tears,” and “Too Late.” The haunted house walk-through will be marked by three distinct sections straight out of The Weeknd’s nightmares.

The After Hours universe explored

Released over two years ago, on 20 March 2020, The Weeknd’s fourth studio album After Hours spawned an entire universe with interconnecting plot lines and characters. It even resulted in a short film of the same title, released just weeks before the album came out. You can watch the short film on YouTube, where it currently has over 12 million views.

Featuring hit singles such as “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears”, After Hours is one of The Weeknd’s most successful projects to date. He would go on to perform many hits from the album as last year’s Super Bowl halftime act.

For those unaware of the overarching After Hours plot, here’s a quick summary:

There are thought to be two different versions of The Weeknd that we follow throughout After Hours: Abel and The Character. The Character is hell-bent on conforming to Hollywood’s standards and gets multiple plastic surgeries to fit in, hence The Character is often spotted wearing bandages on his face. Abel, on the other hand, often becomes involved in other self-destructive behaviours such as indulging in gambling and narcotics. The music videos, and short film, track the two Weeknds as they get up to no good in Hollywood and Las Vegas.

It is unclear as of yet whether the event at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights will play into the narrative arc. For those brave enough to attend the spooky event, we’ll be waiting on your word.
