Christian Eriksen is still hoping to make his emotional return to action with Denmark this week despite missing Brentford’s defeat at Leicester after catching Covid-19.

The playmaker has not represented his country since he suffered a cardiac arrest during their Euro 2020 match against Finland in Copenhagen on June 12, 2021.

Yet both the Danish FA, and Brentford boss Thomas Frank, expressed optimism that Eriksen would be able to link up with the national side for friendlies against Holland and Serbia.

The match against Serbia, on March 29, takes place at Parken Stadium, where the Finland game was also staged.

‘It will be fantastic if Christian plays for Denmark,’ said Frank. ‘It was a big milestone when he played his first game for Brentford against Newcastle (on February 26), and the next milestone is to play for Denmark at Parken. After that, it’s just about football.’

Few expected Eriksen, 30, to return to football after the events of last summer.

He is fitted with an ICD, which is an electronic device connected to the heart, meaning he was prevented from resuming his career with Inter Milan under Italian law. He joined Brentford as a free agent in January.

A statement from the Danish FA read: ‘We have been in ongoing dialogue with Christian and Brentford about the situation. We expect to see Christian as soon as possible during the week. We look forward to having him and expect to have him against the Netherlands and Serbia.’

Iranian winger Saman Ghoddos has also tested positive for Covid-19, putting his own upcoming international commitments in doubt.
