THESE eerie pictures show the shocking state of a home in Alabama which was left abandoned following the owner’s mysterious death.
Spooky photos showed a bedroom laden with junk including a fan, a set of steps, and a clothes rail packed full of women’s clothing.
In another image, the 1890 neoclassical home’s staircase had been rendered inaccessible due to piles of junk blocking access which included a garden bench, a lamp, and empty cat food and games boxes.
Other pictures captured the state of disrepair the property had fallen into with wallpaper peeling from the walls and the fireplace stacked high with food storage tins.
The images were taken by photographer and urban explorer Abandoned Southeast on a visit to the abandoned home in Alabama.
The urban explorer captured the images using his Canon RP camera.
It is thought that the property was built in 1890 for Rebecca Erwin – the granddaughter of prominent local lawyer and politician John Erwin.
Rebecca passed away during the 1930s and the property was sold in the late 1980s to woman known only as ‘Anne’ on the promise that the buyer would restore the property.
Anne was a recluse and local people Abandoned Southeast spoke to said they hadn’t seen her for 15 years but noted that she had a plethora of belongings bursting from the seams of the house.
In January 2021, a postman noticed that mail was piling up inside Anne’s post-box and contacted the police to carry out a welfare check where she was discovered deceased in her back garden at the age of 80.
JUNK ‘PILED UP’
At the time of her death, the house had no working air-conditioning, heat or plumbing and had electricity in just one room.
“Walking inside and seeing how she spent the final years of her life was overwhelming,” said website Abandoned Southeast.
“It is a glimpse into how a mental illness like hoarding can overtake someone’s life.
“It made me sad to see that the former owner was living in such a manner. I have been in a lot of abandoned houses and I have never come across a hoard that is this severe.
“Some parts of the house had a small path you could squeeze through but mostly it was just things piled on top of each other with nowhere to walk.
“When I first walked inside, the smell was overpowering. I’ve never come across anything like it. I had to go back outside and double layer my face mask to be able to breathe inside.
“The floor of the house was littered with animal excrement and mounds of cat litter. After walking through the house, my shoes and socks smelled so bad I had to throw them away.
“I feel like this house is a true diamond in the rough. I hope these photos are seen by someone who has the means and desire to want to save this house.”
