Autry and his family moved to Northern Virginia in 2006. He started coaching at Bishop Ireton Catholic High School as the assistant head coach. In the spring of 2007, Autry joined the AAU circuit and became the coach of NOVA United’s 14-and-under team.
Autry was named an assistant coach at Paul VI High School for the 2007–2008 school year. In 2008, Autry changed AAU teams and joined Team Takeover as an assistant coach for the 17-and-under team.

Seth Greenberg, the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Virginia Tech, hired Autry as the Director of Basketball Operations in the fall of 2008. After two years, Autry was moved up to become an assistant basketball coach for the Hokies.
In the spring of 2010, Autry was headed to the University of Dayton to work with Archie Miller as the assistant head coach. He never got there, though. When Rob Murphy was named head coach at Eastern Michigan University, a job opened up at his old school, Syracuse University. Autry quickly agreed to take the job. After Jim Boeheim, who had been the head coach for a long time, retired on March 8, 2023, Autry was made the new head coach.
