Soaring inflation is also adding £180 a year to grocery bills and petrol prices are rocketing.

The Sun columnist Piers shared his views on Black Thursday on Twitter today.

He said: “Very grim economic news in UK.

“Millions of people will really suffer from this. Govt must do everything it can to help/protect them, and that means a lot more than just the announcements made by @RishiSunak today.”

Energy bills are set to rise by a record £693 a year after the new price cap was confirmed today.

This will take the average household bill to £1,971 a year.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak today outlined a package of support for those affected by the price hike and announced the poorest Brits will get an extra £350 to help them through the energy bills crisis.

Other measures include Council Tax rebates of £150 for low and middle income households.

Boris Johnson defied calls from Tory MPs to scrap the planned National Insurance hike as the money is needed to help the NHS move on from Covid.

Speaking during a visit to Blackpool, the PM said the £12 billion it will raise is needed to tackle the “colossal backlog” in hospitals.

The NI hike will add £130 a year to the tax bill of Brits on a £20,000 salary, and £255 for those who earn £30,000.

People on £50,000 will pay £505 extra annually, those on £80,000 will have to fork out £880 and earners on £100,000 face a £1,130 bill.

Senior Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, chair of the Commons foreign affairs committee, said the energy crisis showed the PM should scrap the planned NI rise.

He said: “April showers won’t be cheap. The sudden surge in the cost of heating will hit families across the country just as the new NI tax kicks in.

“People need control of their lives by having control of their wallets – that’s why lower taxes matter for every home.”
