Natasha Lyonne’s character Nadia Vulvokov is once again defying death in the trippy new teaser for the second season of Russian Doll.

On Monday, Netflix released a 49-second promo clip and announced that the mind-bending time loop series would be returning on April 20. 

The Emmy-nominated comedy-drama initially premiered in February 2019 but production on its sophomore season was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the teaser opens, Nadia is seen boarding the subway. She looks confused as she wakes up while laying on a chair in the train.  

The teaser cuts to Nadia as she walks out of a grave in a cemetery. Another Nadia follows behind her, indicating that she may be reliving her death over and over again as she did in the first season.

She is seen stumbling through the aisle of the subway train with a worried look and then falling through the air in the next scene.

The title of the show is spelled out before the teaser cuts to a shot of the bathroom from the first season where Nadia repeatedly finds herself returning after dying in various ways. 

The black-tiled bathroom, which is located at the avant-garde Manhattan apartment of Nadia’s friend Maxine (Greta Lee) features a gun-shaped handle and a strange glowing blue light embedded in the wall.

The teaser concludes with a scene in which Nadia is seated at a bar talking to a friend.

‘When the universe f**ks with you, let it,’ Nadia says in her trademark cynical style as she takes a shot of whiskey.

The first season followed Nadia, a video game developer dies on night of her death on her 36th birthday. 

She wakes up in the bathroom at her birthday party that was held that evening. 

Nadia finds herself in an endless cycle of dying and returning to the party. 

She later meets Alan Zaveri (Charlie) who is also reliving the night of his death over and over again. 

Together, they try to solve the mystery and break free from the time loop.

The show’s second season synopsis reads: ‘Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations.

 ‘At first they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure, but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.’

Natasha created the series along with Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland and all three serve as executive producers.

The star was nominated for Outstanding Actress Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2019 Emmy Awards with the show also receiving nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and two nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

Season one stars Lee, Yul Vazquez and Elizabeth Ashley are reprising their roles and newcomers include Emmy winner Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) and Sharlto Copley (Powers). 

Last month, Natasha confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the second season of Russian Doll would be set four years after the conclusion of the first.      

The New York native told the media outlet, ‘It’s for sure a puzzle box.

‘With my whole heart, I hope that people watch it all and see where the game goes and lands. I can’t believe we pulled it off.’
