BRITS are in for a “dramatic end” to the week with torrential rain and thunderstorms set to batter the nation for the next seven days.

Over the weekend a yellow thunderstorm warning – which brings with it alerts for power outages – put a dampener on Brits hoping to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

And the wet weather is set to continue this week, with heavy gales, thunder and rain to move in by Wednesday, according to the Met Office.

Forecaster Steven Keates said: “Over the next few days the weather will be unsettled, changeable and perhaps unremarkable for the most part, a bit disappointing for the second week of June.

“Showers should hit parts of England to start the week, with the worst on Wednesday, before a more dramatic end to the week as heavy gales move in.”

He said a “heavy band of rain” will hit parts of southern England on Monday, pushing north as the day progresses, while remaining largely dry in Northern Ireland and Scotland.”

Mr Keates added: “From the middle of the week a new low-pressure front will begin pushing from the south-west, bringing a mixture of rain and thunderstorms in Northern Ireland and northern England.

“Wednesday will be the wettest day of the week, but areas in Scotland and parts of southern England should remain dry.

“However, Scotland’s week of charming weather will begin to fizz out, as the vigorous low pressure front moves north from Thursday, with heavy gales expected in western areas.”

Here is the Office’s prediction: “The later part of June the UK will possibly be under the influence of slightly higher pressure to the southwest, with a chance of above average rainfall for the time of year.

“Temperatures generally around or a little above average at first, which would allow for some short-lived spells of warm or hot weather, especially in the southeast – as would normally be expected in summer.

“These spells become less likely towards the end of the period.”

  • Pollen levels continue to rise across the UK

  • Where’s that heat? It’s June…

Although sunny spells might break through the showers, the UK will be wet all week after the highs of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Met Office predicted “unsettled” weather from Wednesday, the wettest day of the week, with a chance of heavy rain and wind in the North.

But from Friday, expect heavy and thundery showers, with strong or gale force winds to the north and west.

There’s even a flood alert for Bourne Brook in Tamworth, where heavy rainfall has raised the water level at the Hints river gauge.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates told The Mirror: “Over the next few days the weather will be unsettled, changeable and perhaps unremarkable for the most part, a bit disappointing for the second week of June.

“Showers should hit parts of England to start the week, with the worst on Wednesday, before a more dramatic end to the week as heavy gales move in.

  • Unsettled rest of week

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Adam Thornhill said: “The low pressure on Wednesday will bring showers to most areas of the UK, but the heaviest, slow-moving downpours are expected in northern areas, including Northern Ireland, with a chance of associated thunder and lightning.

“Although rainfall amounts are still open to some uncertainty, there’s a chance some areas in the north could see in excess of 20mm of rain within a three-hour period.

“This will largely break up later in the day on Wednesday, leaving behind just a few showers by the late evening.”

Mr Thornhill added: “The track of the former storm currently looks to be grazing the far north-west of the UK on Thursday and Friday and, although the details are still being worked out, winds could be around 45mph for most in the north of the UK, with a chance of some gusts in excess of 55mph in some exposed north-western island and coastal areas.”

From Tuesday evening onwards, showers will reach south-western parts of the UK, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland and continue into Wednesday morning.

Drizzle will then head east across the UK, bringing the potential for thundery downpours across northern areas.

  • UK weather outlook for Wednesday and Thursday

A cloudy start for most with outbreaks of rain.

By the afternoon, sunny spells will develop for most, and rain should dissipate to leave the odd shower.

  • Tonight’s weather
