John Daly Quotes His 1995 British Open Triumph as ‘The Ultimate Win’

The two-time major winner John Daly is one of the most popular golfers in America. When people talk about the golfer, there is no doubt that his victory at the Crooked Stick Golf Club will certainly pop up. However, did you know that it is not his favorite win ever? 

“My favorite wins… probably the way it happened was the PGA,” Daly said. He shared his favorite win during the ‘Uncut with Jay Cutler’ when the host asked the same. He went there as one of the guests, along with the singer Aaron Lewis. 

“But the ultimate win was one in the British at St. Andrews,” the golfer stated. “I mean, that’s the home of golf,” he explained why he picked it as his ultimate favorite over his first major win. 

The 1991 PGA Championship at the Crooked Stick was Daly’s first time winning a major championship. He was just a rookie player on the PGA Tour then. Moreover, what makes the victory special is that he entered the field as the ninth and final alternative. 

Notably, he scored a 69 in the first round without having a practice round. Although the way he won makes it special for him, Daly doesn’t count it as his favorite win ever.

Meanwhile, he won the British Open or the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 1995, which he named to be his favorite win. The Open was his second and final major championship victory. He won it in a playoff against Costantino Rocca. 

As Daly mentioned, St. Andrews is considered the home of golf, with 600 years’ history of the sport. Notably, the Old Course, which has hosted the event 29 times, is hosting the 150th edition of the event this year. 

What does John Daly think about the St. Andrews Golf Links? 

“They (R&A Golf Club officials) don’t like redneck some bi**hes going in there beating them,” Daly said. 

The golfer added that he talked about it with Arnold Palmer and the veteran golfer shared that he had a similar experience. Although they didn’t like him for winning the event, Daly explained that they loved the veteran golfer otherwise. Notably, Palmer won the event back-to-back in 1961 and 1962. 

“R&A and I are pretty good,” Daly further added. “They try to judge the book and the cover before it even happens.”  

According to Daly, St. Andrew’s golf club officials don’t like it when an outsider wins the Open. However, his victory there is the favorite, as it happened in the home of golf.
