Better known as the mentor to current Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, Alex Smith was the first choice QB of the Chiefs until 2017. He also threw for San Francisco and Washington. Smith is one of the biggest symbols of resilience in the NFL. It was only after he miraculously recovered from a terrible leg injury that he was able to return to the field. However, recently his resilience was tested in the most heart-wrenching way possible.
Currently, Smith has retired from the game and keeps sharing glimpses of his life after the NFL. In one of his most recent posts, he shared a tough piece of news with his fans. This left fans both shocked and praying for the former QB.
What did Alex Smith share on social media?
Smith informed on Instagram that his daughter, Sloane, had a malignant brain tumor. Referring to the harrowing experience, he said doctors had recently operated upon her in a long operation. He wrote, “The 10-hour procedure was the most excruciating time of our lives. A clock has never moved so slowly. The incredible neurosurgeons [at Stanford Children’s Hospital] did a miraculous job and were able to remove 100% of the tumor.”

However, the former QB also shared the news that Sloane was now well after the operation and full of life as usual. He wrote, “Sloane—in her true form—bounced back from brain surgery like a rockstar! She didn’t skip a beat.” Apparently, the malignant tumor was of a rare type, with few documented cases and hence no clear way ahead. Fans on Twitter shared Smith’s heart-touching post.

Smith requested fans for some privacy in these tough times for the family. He thanked everyone for their support to his family. The former QB said his youngest daughter’s illness had been the most challenging time they had faced as a family and they are healing together.
Patrick Mahomes mentor’s near-fatal leg injury
The former QB himself had a near-death experience when he had a compound fracture after getting sacked in a game in 2018. He was part of the Washington Commanders at that time. No one anticipated the athlete would be able to play again due to the seriousness of the injury. To make matters worse, Smith required three surgeries to save his life as the wound developed into a septic infection.

However, he put in tremendous efforts to get himself back in playing shape over the next two years. He miraculously returned to the field in the 2020 season. Smith put in matching winning performances and led the Chiefs to the playoffs that year. He returned after the 2020 season. His comeback is considered one of the greatest ever in the NFL.
Smith’s current experience is a tough one but hopefully, the former QB’s resilience would again be the rock holding him and his family and guiding them towards a better future.
