A BBC News presenter left viewers in stitches after they spotted his attempt to stay cool during the hot weather.

Northern Ireland political editor Enda McClafferty delivered his report to camera in a smart navy suit jacket, shirt and tie – but those watching at home had no idea he was sporting a pair of shorts on the bottom.

The journalist was caught out after a man living close to the live broadcast site spotted him out of his window.

He ran into the street and zoomed in on Mr McClafferty, completely blowing his cover.

The short clip, shared on social media, was captioned: “Too hot for the full suit, the big man is wearing shorts.”

Users found it hilarious but some admitted they have been wearing similar get-up.

One man said: “Too right. These working from home folk have been getting away with shirt, tie and pyjama bottoms combo for over two years now.

“Its time to balance the books.”

Another wrote: “This was me doing a job interview on Teams.”

And a third commented: “I don’t know why but this made me laugh.”

Mr McClafferty, who was speaking on the main 6.30pm news at the time, has since revealed he has learned his lesson.

“My secret is out there, I thought I was in the clear,” he told BBC NI’s Good Morning Ulster.

“I thought I could get away with wearing on the top half a suit, but on the bottom half a pair of shorts because it has been very warm over the course of the past week.

“Little did I know there was an eagle eyed householder not that far away with a camera phone to hand who raced out pretty quickly snapped a shot of the television screen and then did a quick pan outside and caught me standing in my shorts, chino shorts.

“Lesson learned.”
