She’s been a firm favourite on the hit ITV show for the last two years.

But Coronation Street star Kel Allen has quit the soap and the actress, who plays Laura Neelan, has already filmed her final scenes.

Her exit comes as it was revealed on Thursday nights episode that her terminally ill character is to take the blame for her husband Rick’s murder.

Viewers watched as she handed herself in to the police so that Rick’s real killer, Gary Windass, can continue caring for her daughter Kelly.

Speaking about her emotional final scenes Kel said: ‘Oh my god, it’s emotional. I get emotional and start filling up just thinking about it.

‘What a way to go. When they asked me to come back for this final storyline I couldn’t believe it, it was too good to turn down.

‘As an actor to get your teeth stuck into something so heartbreaking, dramatic and even with humour thrown in is just incredible.

‘It’s been three years in the running and people have been desperate for the truth to come out but I don’t think they were expecting that twist.

‘Because of that twist the death scenes when they come are even more emotionally charged.’

Kel’s departure comes as her on screen colleague Fiz Stape is also set to bid farewell to the cobbles for good as she prepares for a fresh start with boyfriend Phill Whittaker.

Portrayed by the shows long-timer Jennie McAlpine, 38, Fiz made her first appearance in the soap 21 years ago as Roy and Hayley Cropper’s foster daughter.

And the most recent character development has seen Fiz move on from cheating Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and find love again with Phil (Jamie Kenna), whom she hopes to move into a posh new pad with.

Fiz and Phill have been planning to sell up on the Street – and Tyrone agrees to drop the asking price on the house in a bid for a quicker sale.

But when Phill gets sacked for leaking a report to Maria Connor during council election proceedings, he admits to Fiz he can’t cough up for the house renovations.

Meanwhile, a determined Fiz is faced with yet more problems when she attempts to hurry the sale, only to discover from the estate agent that the past sink hole disaster is deterring prospect buyers.

Negotiations with Tyrone surrounding dropping the price further are not initially successful, but he later caves in, meaning the house sale can go through within weeks.

Fiz is full of gratitude for her ex partner and shares the news they will be leaving sooner, which leaves Tyrone upset.

Back in 2001, Fiz was slated for only five episodes before impressing bosses enough to extend her contract.

Fiz has been at the heart of several gripping storylines.

Her ex-husband John Stape (Graeme Hawley) committed three murders and roped her in to help bury the bodies, where she implicated others for the crime.

Fiz also gave birth to her daughter Hope prematurely during the live 50th anniversary episode, with Jennie becoming the first actress to act out a birth live on a soap opera.
