Jihad Al-Shamie identified as the main suspect in recent Manchester synagogue attack

British police have identified Jihad Al-Shamie as the man behind Thursday’s deadly assault in Manchester. The incident took place at around 10:15 a.m., as Al-Shamie drove his vehicle at high speed into a group of worshippers gathered outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue for Yom Kippur prayers. After crashing into the crowd, Jihad got out of the car armed with a large knife and began stabbing people indiscriminately.

According to witnesses, there was “absolute chaos” at the site as people tried to flee in fear. Jihad managed to kill two victims at the scene, while authorities rushed four others to nearby hospitals in critical condition. Upon receiving news of the attack, armed officers arrived within minutes and shot Al-Shamie dead, ending the violent rampage before he killed more people.

Jihad al Shamie, 35, was shot dead by officers seven minutes after launching a car and knife attack after he drove at people outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, in Crumpsall, before stabbing a man.

One of the victims killed in yesterday’s attack was shot mistakenly by officers while three injured are still in hospital with serious injuries.

Charges and allegations

The Metropolitan Police have since declared the attack a terrorist incident, and Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor confirmed the arrest of two additional suspects linked to the case. Investigators also revealed that Al-Shamie’s name did not appear in any previous police or counter-terrorism databases. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has denounced the assault as a “vile act of antisemitic terror” and promised to increase police presence at synagogues and Jewish community centers throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the victims who were killed were 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz. Both of them were residents and members of the Jewish community. Three others also suffered severe injuries from both the vehicle ramming and stabbing. GMP have reportedly arrested two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s on suspicion of preparing and instigating terrorist acts.
