A Daughter, Her Father and the Long-Gone Poet Who Brought Them Together

Hearing this story, Calhoun grew to turn out to be glad that succeeding the place her father had failed was her subsequent process. “I just thought, I’m so much nicer than my dad, I’m so much more fun,” she talked about. “Everything he did wrong, I will do right.” She may be respectful, she would do her homework and, she talked about, “I was totally going to win.”

Sitting exterior at a sidewalk cafe in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Calhoun laughed as she recalled her early hubris on the way in which through which to writing her new e-book, “Also a Poet,” out June 14. At 46, Calhoun is the author of “St. Marks is Dead,” a historic previous of the colorful downtown neighborhood the place she grew up, “Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give” and “Why We Can’t Sleep,” along with the ghostwriter of better than a dozen books. Despite having a broadly recognized creator for a father, her occupation different wasn’t predestined, she talked about. Growing up, Calhoun had always suggested herself that her father was the creator, so she wouldn’t, or couldn’t, be one.

But in a spontaneous act of reinvention, nonetheless in her early twenties and newly employed at The Austin Chronicle, she began writing beneath Calhoun, her heart title. She found that along with the distinctive, well-known surname, she had moreover shed the parental shadow hanging over her.
