Affirmations are extremely important to help celebrate Black children while at the same time teaching them to celebrate and feel good about themselves. It is imperative that parents and guardians continue to practice “speaking over” our children with positivity to help them grow. Below are a few affirmation tools for black children that every parent needs in their toolbox.

Remember, “We live in a society where it’s easy to get bogged down with lots of negativity,” Psychologist Lauren Alexander, PhD, said in a recent interview. “Positive affirmations are a way to help shuttle out some of that negativity, in terms of the things that we say to ourselves.”

I Affirm Me: The ABCs of Inspiration for Black Kids by Nyasha Williams

According to the experts at Parents.com, parents can use the alphabet to guide even the youngest of children. With this tool, Nyasha Williams pairs each letter with culturally affirming phrases worth repeating. From “A is for Afro” to “V is for Vision,” etc. This book of affirmations nurtures Black children and their guardians, helping them to embrace who they are and the joy of childhood.

Liberated Young Affirmation Cards

According to their website, these flash cards were created to be used as a “powerful tool to spark self-love, confidence, and positivity.” The first cards in a series were created to teach children to see the beauty of themselves from within.
