Ashanti is a Grammy Award-winning multi platinum singer, songwriter, and actress. She is the CEO of Written Entertainment, and now she can add “author” to her amazing resume. Ashanti pens children’s book and talks plans to have kids in new interview.

“My Name Is a Story” is Ashanti’s first kids’ book. The story was inspired by her own struggles with her name as a child.

The new author exclusively told People Magazine that while growing up, she was questioned about the pronunciation and meaning of her name. However, with the support of her parents, the she learned to celebrate her name and the history behind it.

The name “Ashanti” is inspired by the pre-colonial West African Ashanti tribe that emerged in the 17th century in what is now the nation of Ghana. The name means “woman of strength.”

To celebrate her book, Ashanti stopped by the Essence Festival to share in the experience with fans. The singer told People that it was amazing.

“The stories were like, ‘I’m so glad that you’re doing this because I always felt embarrassed when it was time for the teacher to call out everyone’s name and she would stutter on my name,’ ” the singer told the popular entertainment news outlet in regards to her conversations with fans. “I didn’t want them to feel like that.”

She continued, “I didn’t get bullied and beat up, but it was always maybe a little giggle, maybe a little, ‘Well, why is your name like that?’ “I was fortunate enough to have a mom that genuinely encouraged me and taught me very early that my name is beautiful.”

The “I Got It” singer told People that she does plan on having her own children someday soon, yet right now, she has a lot going with her career. However, when she does slow down, and becomes a mom, she won’t have to come up with names, as she she already has them picked out!

“It’s just been a lot going on these past few years. It feels like my career is re-surging. So, there’s so much going on, but I’m definitely planning on chilling soon and experiencing [motherhood].”
