Rumours that Joel “The Kid Mero” Martinez and Daniel “Desus Nice” Baker, aka the Bodega Boys, are breaking up as a podcasting duo have been heating up over the weekend, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s any personal beef between them.
The pair’s successful Desus & Mero talk show ran on Complex TV from 2014, then Viceland from October 2016 to June 2018, before migrating to Showtime.
It has run on Showtime since February 2019 and is in its fourth season with the streaming service. Showtime renewed the series for a fourth season in August 2021, but episodes have been less frequent than before.
With no new episodes since the 180th, which aired on June 23, 2022 – and some significant revelations via the Bodega Boys Daily Twitter account – fans of the duo have spent the weekend worrying they’re breaking up.
What do we know about the supposed ‘beef’ between Desus and Mero?
Yesterday (July 17, 2022), the Bodega Boys Daily Twitter account shared a series of photos and screenshots of social media uploads from the past few weeks.
The first image is of Desus and Mero. Next is what appears to be a tweet from Desus Nice, in which he writes: “You think I abandoned y’all but the art is coming back.”
Note: this particular tweet is from June 19, 2022 – almost a month ago. Find it here. And “the art” is the phrase by which the Bodega Boys’ followers refer to their podcasts.

In the next image, a user who goes by the name The Black Don Draper writes it’s “nice to have confirmation”. They add, however, it is “still a dark day in history”. They appear to be referring to Desus and Mero’s decision to break up as a podcasting duo.
‘The hive deserved better than this ending’
Desus Nice’s response to The Black Don Draper reads: “The hive deserved better than this ending. Reddit can slander my name but when the truth comes out… actually just wait.”
In other words, it would’ve been better if the podcast had gone out with a bang. Later, when the same user replied to Desus’ June 19 tweet mentioned above, Desus replied: “I tried y’all.”
As in, he tried to ensure “the art” would come back. He asked his followers to “believe in me” – the “I tried” tweet therefore suggests he was unsuccessful in his attempts to bring about new episodes of the podcast.
But does that mean there’s “beef” between Desus and Mero – are they breaking up because of personal reasons?
Any mentions of ‘beef’ between Mero and Desus have come from other people
Desus and Mero are long-time friends. They’ve worked together since 2013 – almost a decade.
In that time, a lot can change. Joel “The Kid Mero” Martinez has four children – three boys and a girl – with wife Heather Martinez.
Daniel “Desus Nice” Baker, the older of the two, may not have been busy in quite the same way, but he’s also had other things on his plate. This year, for example, he has been enjoying the company of, among others, Kevin Hart.
As Reddit users discuss the possibility Desus and Mero may have “beef”, note making a weekly podcast is “not easy. Now they have bread and are enjoying their lives.”
“I don’t think it’s beef,” writes one. “They just have very different lives. It feels like people seem to forget they’re co-workers. It’s great if you’re friends with your co-workers but that doesn’t mean you’re going to do everything together and be on the same page 100 per cent of the time.”

Beyond the break-up of the Bodega Boys podcast, the rest is speculation
As All Hiphop notes, rumours The Kid Mero and Desus Nice are “no longer a duo” are “running wild online”.
The outlet brands what’s going on between them an “alleged implosion”. Meanwhile, fans of the duo have been airing their thoughts on Twitter.
One observes that, while “there’s a lot of speculation about how deep it goes”, it appears “at the very least, Desus and Mero are ending the Bodega Boys podcast”.
Desus Nice tweeted yesterday: “Twitter comes for everyone eventually.” That prompted others to ask he “spill”. WNBC-TV reporter Tracie Strahan tweeted she needs Desus and Mero to “stop out this beef”.
But beyond the fact Desus and Mero appear to breaking up as a podcasting duo, there’s no actual evidence of any spat. On Sunday, B/R Walk-Off interviewed each of them about the Yankees’ chances of winning the World Series this year.
