Parents know that beyond a shadow of a doubt, it takes a village to help raise a child in today’s environment. For Black fathers, that can possibly mean the difference between successful parenting and not. Black fathers are negatively portrayed in the media although research shows that Black dads often share responsibilities and display more effective co-parenting than non-Black fathers. As a response to this and as a support to Black dads, fatherhood platforms have popped up over all parts of the internet. According to Parents.com, here are five platforms that support Black dads.
Fathers Incorporated is an award-winning not-for-profit with a mission to “engage, equip and empower a community network of fathers and families” through community support, parent education, and positive representation. Through efforts such as “Real Dads Read” and “Million Fathers March,” CEO Kenneth Braswell wants all black fathers to thrive.
According to Parents.com, The Dad Gang is committed to building globally and creating a safe space for Black men to find community, support, and socialization. Annually, The Dad Gang hosts the Father’s Day March of Dads in Brooklyn, New York. The event connects hundreds of Black fathers with the organization in order to “raise awareness that Black dads are present and involved.” The numbers do not lie!
Matt Prestbury, the founder of The Black Fathers Foundation, started the group with his wife in 2018 to, “to provide resources that enable Black men to effectively raise children and strengthen families.” The Black Fathers Foundation has three focus areas: providing, networking, and creating.
Dope Black Dads started out as a Whatsapp message group between founder Marvyn Harrison and his friends. Fast-forward to today and with over 100K Instagram followers, a podcast, a children’s book, etc., it embraced the mission to “celebrate, heal, inspire and educate Black fathers for better outcomes for Black families.”
Through podcasts, live IG interviews, etc., the Dear Fathers official website states that its main purpose is to: serve as The Premiere Media Platform dedicated to telling stories of black fathers from all angles while also empowering our community with tangible resources that inspire, heal, and strengthen the black man. Dear Fathers is on all social media outlets in addition to touting an interactive website.
