Franco Casalini is an Italian basketball coach who is most known for his successful tenure with the legendary Olimpia Milano squad in the late 1980s. Both his admirers and family were shocked by his passing today.

At age 36, he took over Dan Peterson’s first team and became the country’s youngest coach to win the European Cup, or what is now known as the Euroleague. He was 25 years old when Mike D’Antoni hired him to work as Pippo Faina’s assistant. He and Dan Peterson won the title at Olimpia in 1978.

In 1971, Casalini switched from playing basketball to coaching in the ranks of the Social Osa, a legendary Milan team named after the oratory of the Salesians of Milan. In 1972, the student team performed well and took first place in the City of Sesto competition.
