Leave It To Beaver actor Tony Dow has sadly died aged 77, but how old was the star when he featured in the classic sitcom?

News of the actor’s passing was confirmed by Dow’s son Christopher on Wednesday (July 27) after his death was prematurely announced earlier this week.

Leave It To Beaver first aired more than six decades ago 

The classic sitcom first hit screens in October 1957 and centered around the Cleaver family and the adventures of their youngest son Theodore aka Beaver.  Leave It To Beaver ran for a total of six seasons before it ultimately went off air in June 1963. 

Tony Dow portrayed the eldest son of the Cleaver family, Wally, who helped wise his younger brother Beaver to the ways of the world. 

Leave It to Beaver viewers got to watch Dow grow up across the show’s six-season run as he starred as Wally across a total of 234 episodes.

How old was Tony Dow in Leave It To Beaver?

Wally Cleaver actor Tony Dow was born on 13 April 1945, meaning he would have been just 12 years old when Leave It To Beaver first aired. 

Dow’s role in the series was his TV debut, with it launching the then-young actor’s career as he became a household name for his feature. 

The actor reflected on his rise to fame at such a young age, in an interview with CBS in January.

At the time, Dow admitted: “It’s sad to be famous at 12 years old or something, and then you grow up and become a real person, and nothing’s happening for you.”

When Leave It To Beaver ended in 1963, Dow would have been 18 years old.

Dow played Wally all grown up in 80s spin-off series

The late actor reprised his role as Wally Cleaver in a sequel of the classic late 50s series titled Still The Beaver. 

The series was an adult reunion of Leave It To Beaver and followed Dow’s character Wally and his younger brother Beaver with families of their own. 

Still The Beaver aired for six years between March 1983 and June 1989 over a total of four seasons. 

When the series hit screens, Dow would have been 37, with the show having premiered a month before his 38th birthday. The actor would have been 44 years old by the time the show went off the air.
