Phil Mickelson said he will be leaving the PGA Tour as golfers prepared to compete in this week’s first LIV Golf event in London.

Despite the startup’s ongoing controversy, the 2013 Open winner claimed he “couldn’t be happier” with his decision to join LIV Golf as he fired a 72 on Thursday in a location he enjoys.

How’s it going for Phil Mickelson? Is He Retired?

Since he hasn’t played in over three months, Phil Mickelson will not be defending his PGA Championship crown at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the following week.

On Friday, the PGA of America confirmed that Mickelson would not be competing in the PGA Championship. Mickelson departed the sport three months ago after making incendiary comments against the Super Golf League, which is located in Saudi Arabia. He distanced himself from the master in April.

For the first time since 1994, six-time major champion Mickelson missed the Masters last month. He has three tournament victories.

With his 50th-year-old victory at the PGA at Kiawah Island in South Carolina, Phil Mickelson became the oldest major champion in golf history. He hasn’t played on the PGA Tour since failing to make the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in late January.

The Open Broadcast Cut and the Phil Mickelson PGA Drama

Author Alan Shipnuck, whose unofficial biography of golfer known as “Lefty” will be released next week, disclosed Mickelson’s incendiary comments regarding the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian sponsors of a breakaway circuit. As a result, Mickelson has chosen to take a break from the game.

In order to gain influence with the circuit, Mickelson accused the PGA Tour of being “greedy” and said he was ignoring allegations of human rights violations committed by the Saudi Arabian monarchy.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Mickelson has chosen not to defend his major championship the following year, making him just the fourth golfer to do so in the last 50 years.

The one before him was Rory McIlroy in 2015, who had to forgo The Open because he injured his ankle playing soccer right before the event. Woods missed the 2008 PGA Championship because he was still recovering from knee surgery after winning the event in 2006 and 2007. Payne Stewart, the U.S. Open winner in 1999, died in a plane accident in October of that year.
