Former Papa John’s worker Jose Benitez-Tilley, 20, is charged with shooting two of his coworkers and then attempting to have sex with one of them. Judge Michael Christo Feno of Circuit Court sentenced the Indiana man to 65 years in prison. In February of this year, Haley Smith, 22, and Dustin Carr, 37, were working late shifts at the fast food restaurant when the incident occurred.

The accused’s sexual assault charges were dismissed by the prosecution in exchange for his June guilty plea to the double killing. A Papa John’s employee discovered the remains of his coworkers who had worked the closing shift the previous night and called 911 at 10:11 a.m. on February 13, 2022. Jose Benitez-Tilley worked at the restaurant at 1500 Cassopolis Street in Elkhart before being let go for “unspecified reasons.”

After a “brief talk,” as other restaurant employees put it, he left the place after arriving at 10 p.m. to enquire about re-employment. He returned a little while later and asked to speak with Dustin Carr. Jose’s last verbal report indicated that he departed the establishment on February 12, 2022, about 11:15 p.m. The timestamps of Jose’s appearance in CCTV footage from a nearby Family Dollar store matched the estimated timings of the victims’ demise. This demonstrated that Jose had been there. The criminal was recognised by his golden Dodge Caravan, which left the structure at 11:32 p.m.

During a police inquiry in Goshen, Indiana, he admitted to killing the two workers and claimed he attempted to have sex with the female victim before attempting and failing to dispose of their bodies. The detectives added, “Jose informed that on his second visit to the restaurant, he used a handgun to shoot and kill both Haley Smith and Dustin Carr. He “half undressed” Hayley before having sex with her. Before leaving the murder scene, Jose seized Hayley’s purse, Dustin’s jewellery, and cash from the office. He also made an effort to open the restaurant’s safe, but failed.

A comprehensive affidavit was made available following Jose’s interview with the Elkhart Homicide Unit investigators. The two victims’ relatives were visibly devastated by the heinousness of the murder committed against their loved ones as they listened to victim impact statements on Friday, July 15.

Smith’s family member Jennifer Conway said, “It is impossible to share in someone else’s life after three years of sitting next to them at the dinner table, not loving them, not caring for them, and dealing with all of their highs and lows. a life that was taken irrationally.”
