Kyla Pratt is a doting mom who loves to promote self-confidence. The celebrity mom recently partnered with Aussie Kids to spread the word about the company’s new children’s book, BeYOUtiful Hair.
The book is a must-read, according to Aussie Kids. “BeYOUtiful Hair not only educates kids on the beauty of hair diversity and self-acceptance, but it also helps parents understand that hair is such an important part of a child’s identity,” the website reads.
Kyla Pratt is definitely onboard with helping parents understand the importance of good hair care. “I feel like most little Black girls have trauma when they’re growing up and getting their hair done,” the veteran actress tells Romper. “I feel like our parents weren’t in a place of understanding at that time,” Pratt says. “I want them to embrace their hair and texture and give them a chance to love their hair.”
Kyla Pratt, like many women, did not begin to fully embrace her natural curls until her adult years. “I don’t know anything about detangler [because] I didn’t do my own hair,” the celebrity tells Romper. “The first time I tried [detangler] on my daughter’s hair, I was like, ‘What? It’s just smoothly going through?’”
Pratt’s daughters, Lyric and Liyah, love wash days with mom. Kyla admits, though, that such days of self-care must be planned.
“To do their hair is a journey,” Kyla tells Romper. “I work all the time, and they have school,” the actress shares. “Finding the balance of being the ‘perfect mom’ is trying to make sure they get enough sleep, eat properly, [and then it’s], ‘OK, I need to do their hair.’”
“I’m always looking for hairstyles that will last them a couple of days, so my favorite thing to do is to braid up their natural hair without adding hair, [and that] lasts about two weeks.”
