Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona announced in an interview that she is defecting from the Democratic Party and declaring herself an independent candidate.
The first-term senator told POLITICO in a 45-minute interview that she won’t caucus with Republicans and that she intends to vote the same way she has for the previous four years. She declared, “Neither my values nor my behavior will change.”
I’ve registered as an independent in Arizona, Sinema said in a statement on Thursday. “I know this might surprise some people, but I think it makes a lot of sense. I’ve never really tried to fit into a party box, and I don’t want to,” Sinema said.
“Removing myself from the partisan structure is not only true to who I am and how I operate, but I also believe it will give many people across the state and country who are sick of partisanship a place to belong,” the politician said.
Her switch comes only a few days after the Democratic Party won a narrow majority in the Senate. This happened when Georgia incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock won a run-off election in the state, beating out retired football player Herschel Walker.
