President Joe claimed that this was an incorrect interpretation of his words, and that he actually said that Russia’s actions would only change if the rest of the world reacted harshly to them and devalued their position in the globe.

Early life

Alabama is the state in which Kaitlan Collins made her debut. Her father, Jeff Collins, works in the financial industry as a mortgage banker. Collins has indicated that she does not recall either of her parents actively participating in the political process or having strong ideas regarding political candidates. She has also described her childhood as being “apolitical.”

After receiving his diploma from Prattville High School, Collins continued his education at the University of Alabama. She first pursued a degree in chemistry, following in her sister’s footsteps, before switching to a journalism concentration. In May of 2014, she finally received her Bachelor of Arts degree, having majored in both political science and journalism. Collins participated in the activities of the Alpha Phi sorority as a member.

In 2018, the organization Log Cabin Republicans discovered some tweets that she had posted while she was a student at Alabama in 2011. Collins referred to lesbians using the derogatory term “fag” and stated that she was unsure “whether I want to room with a lesbian.” She subsequently issued an apology for the tweets, writing the following: “When I was in college, I used foolish language in a few tweets to my pals.” It was childish, but that in no way reflects how I actually feel about anything.

Career

Collins relocated to Washington, D.C. after finishing college. She began working for The Daily Caller as an entertainment correspondent in June 2014. She began reporting the Trump administration in January 2017 after being selected the Daily Caller’s White House reporter after covering the 2016 presidential election.

Collins was given the opportunity to appear on CNN multiple times while she was still employed for The Daily Caller. She complimented network president Jeff Zucker for bringing her on despite the ideological bent of her present employment when they first met at a White House correspondent event in the spring of 2017. Collins was then given a job interview and joined the CNN White House staff in July 2017. She visited at least six different nations with President Trump.

Collins, who was the day’s pool reporter, went to a photo opportunity in the Oval Office on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Collins questioned Trump on Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, and Vladimir Putin as the event came to a close. Trump disregarded her inquiries. Collins was then denied access to a press conference for the Trump administration that day in the White House Rose Garden and informed by top White House officials that her inquiries were “inappropriate for that location.” While Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway said that Collins’ actions were motivated by “being nice,” Trump press secretary Sarah Sanders claimed that Collins had “shouted questions and refused to leave.” Bill Shine, Trump’s deputy chief of staff for communications, objected to the term “ban” being used to describe the White House’s decision to prevent her from attending the event but “refused to tell reporters what word he would use to represent the White House’s decision.” The Collins’ ban, according to CNN, was “retaliatory” and “not representative of an open and free press.” The prohibition was criticized by the White House Correspondents Association as being “completely inappropriate, foolish, and weak.” Fox News president Jay Wallace defended Collins in a statement, claiming that his company “[stood] in strong solidarity with CNN for the right to full access for our journalists as part of a free and unrestricted press.”

Collins was one of the 12 people to watch in TV news in January 2019 according to Crain’s NewsPro.

In 2019, Forbes magazine identified her as one of the 30 under 30 in media.

She was chosen as one of Mediaite’s 2019 list of the Most Influential in News Media in that December.

Collins questioned the president in April 2020 about his assertion that he possessed complete control over the limitations on social distance caused by the unique coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Later in April, she was asked by a White House representative to switch places with a reporter from a different network sat in the back of the press room during a White House press briefing. Collins and the other reporter both declined to abide by the request. The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) had been in charge of the briefing room’s socially dispersed seating arrangement, and White House officials had approved it the month before. Collins refused to follow the White House official’s instructions, leading the latter to speculate that the Secret Service would be called, albeit this possibility did not materialize.

Collins made headlines once more in November 2020 when White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany declined to call Collins, stating, “I don’t call on activists.

Collins covered the 2020 US presidential election as the White House Correspondent for CNN for a significant portion of the written and live television coverage.

Collins received a promotion to top White House correspondent for the incoming Biden administration on January 11, 2021. She was one of the youngest chief White House correspondents for a major media network at the age of 28, and the youngest chief White House correspondent in CNN history.

On June 16, 2021, Joe Biden rebutted a query from Collins regarding his confidence that Vladimir Putin would change his behavior as he continues to deny cyberattacks and the persecuting of political opposition during his press conference following their summit in Geneva. According to President Biden, this is a mischaracterization of his remarks; he really stated that Russia’s behavior would change if the rest of the world responded negatively to them and devalued their status in the international community. President Biden approached a gathering of reporters on the runway shortly after the confrontation and publicly apologized, saying that he owed Collins “an apology,” before boarding Air Force One.
