INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: The heartbroken mother of a teenage girl whose life support was recently turned off has asserted that her daughter was still alive at the time that treatment was turned off. After having a potentially fatal allergic reaction to shellfish and an asthma crisis on July 23, Treasure Perry was hospitalized and placed on medicine that would keep her alive. She was transported to the Riley Hospital for Children in downtown Indianapolis, but on August 2 doctors determined that she had already died from brain damage.
It was stated that on Thursday, August 12, the life support system for the 17-year-old was turned off against the wishes of her family. It is said that initially, a judge agreed with the family’s requests and made the observation that “the injury suffered by the Plaintiff will be irreparable in that if life-sustaining measures are terminated, the Plaintiff will likely be deceased.” However, the judge eventually reversed their decision.” However, on Wednesday, August 11, the court decided not to grant the family’s request to keep the patient on life support for an additional week. Instead, the court instructed the family to look for a hospital that would be willing to offer medical care for the girl.

However, it was said that searching for another hospital was similarly fruitless because Treasure did not have a tracheostomy procedure performed on her. According to the Mayo Clinic, a tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which a hole is created through the front of the neck and into the windpipe (trachea). In order to keep the airway open for breathing, a tracheostomy tube is inserted into the hole.
Angela Kosarue, the teen’s mother, had previously stated to NBC that “God can perform a miracle, but I know it’s down to the wire.” This was before the teen was removed from the ventilator. She went on to say, “I have no intention of giving up. I still don’t. I’ve used up all of my alternatives, but I’m going to keep fighting for her to the very end,” she said, before adding, “I think that death occurs when your heart stops beating and your body shuts down.”
Treasure, who was one of her seven siblings, was recalled by her aunt Skylee Nicole Kosarue as “an outstanding niece, sister, aunt, daughter, and granddaughter” after she passed away. Skylee Nicole Kosarue was one of Treasure’s relatives. Skylee stated that they never lost up hope for her, despite the fact that the physicians failed both her and us. The aunt went on Facebook and posted the following message: “My baby!! She was such a lovely person, and she made it a point to let me know how much she cared for me. You made off with a piece of my heart. Things will never be the same again in life. I literally am at a loss for words. Nobody understands how much suffering this causes. Nobody can possibly understand my suffering right now.”
In an earlier post, Skylee had mentioned the following: “Riley’s Hospital for Children has given my sister, Treasure’s mom, till 12pm today and they will be pulling her off of life support. My sister put in a valiant effort to put an end to their oppression. She made an attempt to engage in combat with Treasure. She would be rejected by everyone. This is such a depressing and messed up world.”
She included the following in the note: “Why is my newborn being taken away from me and my husband? Because she is attempting to take her own breath and live on her own? I should not be expected to comprehend something that I am incapable of doing. I have no idea what to do next. My heart will be shattered beyond repair. Things will never be the same again. My immediate family will never be the same again. Just say a prayer for both of us, please. At this moment, our suffering is beyond description.”
