At Ivana Trump’s funeral on Wednesday (20 July 2022), her and Donald’s three children stood together, alongside their respective spouses and families, as the hearse carrying her coffin arrived at St Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, the BBC reports.
The location has raised questions about Ivana Trump’s faith. For his part, her former husband Donald Trump has said he is Presbyterian.
However, he and his family attended Sunday services at Marble Collegiate Church in NYC for 50 years. That’s where he and Ivana married in 1977. It’s a Protestant church in Manhattan.
But what was Ivana Trump’s religion – was she Catholic (like her parents), or did she subscribe to a different faith?
Was Ivana Trump Catholic?
Yes. According to MySpiritFM’s reporting on Ivana Trump’s funeral, her parish office confirmed that she was Catholic.
It would not comment, however, on whether or not she was a regular Mass-goer.
She never revealed much about her faith to the public, but her marriage to Donald Trump took place in the Protestant church he and his family attended for decades.
Donald, meanwhile, has said he is Presbyterian. He told Christian Broadcasting Network in 2011 that he thinks “religion is a wonderful thing. I think my religion is a wonderful religion.”
Ivana Trump was born into a Catholic family
She was born to Catholic parents in what used to be Czechoslovakia.
In 1950, according to data from national censuses, 76.7% of Czechs were Catholic. The deceased to 39.1% in 1991, after the fall of communism. It’s now much lower, at 9.3%.
But the point is, when Ivana Trump was growing up in what is now Czechia (or the Czech Republic), the majority of her compatriots were Catholic.
Her parents were Catholic, and “secretly” raised Ivana in their faith – according to The Atlantic’s review of her book Raising Trump. But, it adds, in the values she shared with her ex-husband Donald, Ivana Trump “swirls the exhaust of the Protestant ethic”.
Where did she and Donald marry?
Donald Trump and his family attended Sunday services at Marble Collegiate Church in New York City for over 50 years.
In 2016, per The New York Times, he didn’t know whether he had formally joined the denomination of which Marble Church was a part. Its congregation is part of two denominations in the Reformed tradition: the United Church of Christ and the Reformed Church in America.
Marble Collegiate Church dates back to 1628, and is one of the oldest continuous Protestant congregations in North America.
Norman Vincent Peale, who was the pastor of Marble Church from 1932 to 1984, officiated Donald and Ivana Trump’s marriage in 1977.

What do we know about Ivana and Donald Trump’s children’s attitudes towards religion?
The Pew Research Center reported in March 2020 that “most Americans don’t see (Donald) Trump as religious”, and fewer than half say they think he’s Christian.
New York Magazine’s Intelligencer imprint wrote in December last year about Donald Trump Jr’s “rejection of one of the central teachings of Christianity” – to turn the other cheek.
It also cites Politico’s reporting that his father’s “very favourite Bible adage” was “an eye for an eye”.
Middle child Ivanka, meanwhile, has converted to Judaism. Per the Jerusalem Post, Vicky Ward argues in her book Kushner, Inc that former president Donald Trump was “baffled by his daughter’s conversion” to Judaism before her wedding to husband Jared.
And finally, Eric Trump once claimed that his father had “literally saved Christianity” during an en interview on a North Dakota radio show, indicating that he is at the very least of the Christian faith.
