Who Is Duke Lacrosse Scandal Reade Seligmann?
Three Duke University lacrosse players, including Reade, were falsely accused of racially motivated rape.
The school expelled Seligmann after he was accused of kidnapping, rape, and sexual assault. In addition, Duke let the team’s coach go and put the rest of the season on hold.
He currently holds the titles of senior associate and member of the Litigation & Trial Practice Group in Alston & Bird’s New York office. He focuses on ordinary business lawsuits.
Reade graduated with his J.D. in 2013 from Emory University School of Law, where he also won the G. Conley Ingram Scholarship and the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in Media Law.
In addition, he received the Frederick Lippitt Prize for Public Service and a B.A. in history and public policy from Brown University.
Reade Seligmann: Crystal Magnum Falsely Accused Victim
He was the focus of a widely publicized criminal case from 2006 in Durham, North Carolina, involving three lacrosse players from Duke University who were wrongly accused of rape. Collin Finnerty and David Evans were two of his friends.
The accuser was dancer and stripper Crystal Mangum, a student at North Carolina Central University. In March 2006, she was hired to perform as a stripper at a Duke Blue Devils lacrosse team event.
On March 13, 2006, the lacrosse team reportedly performed the conduct at a party at the Durham homes of two of the team leaders.
The case’s conclusion generated an open discussion on campus regarding racism, sexual assault, media prejudice, and due process. In the end, it resulted in Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong’s resignation, disbarment, and temporary imprisonment as the primary prosecutor.
After that, on April 11, 2007, Roy Cooper, the attorney general of North Carolina, dismissed all charges against the three lacrosse players, claiming they were innocent and the victims of a terrible haste to judgment.
Seligmann and his teammates were cleared of all charges following the case, but the false identification that connected those horrible actions to his name also altered the path of his life.
What’s become of Reade Seligmann?
Seligmann currently owes approximately $6.5 million in federal taxes and is enrolled in Emory University’s law program in Atlanta.
He believed he had lost his team, his school, and his dreams in the “tragic rush to accuse,” as the attorney general of North Carolina later put it. But he was fortified by the situation that could have destroyed him.
The teenage Essex Fells resident also started working with the Innocence Project, a non-profit group devoted to freeing those unfairly imprisoned and changing the justice system. He organized a Rhode Island witness identification symposium throughout part of his senior year at Brown.
The Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has given him a significant humanitarian award in recognition of his efforts to raise approximately $50,000 for the cause.
