In the town of Perinton, close to Rochester, New York, Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin was the target of an attempted knife attack on Thursday.
The evening’s Veterans of Foreign Wars gathering was cut short when the suspect stormed the stage and attempted to knife Lee Zeldin. Zeldin and the alleged attacker engaged in a brief scuffle before being held by Zeldin’s supporters, including AMVETS national director Joe Chenelly.
The situation is now being investigated, according to a statement made by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect’s identify has not yet been made public by the authorities.

Lee Zeldin was being attacked while delivering a speech on bail reform, according to CNBC.
One witness detailed what transpired when the attacker charged onto the stage in the direction of Lee Zeldin in an interview with Rochester First.
Zeldin returned to the platform and resumed speaking when the attacker was subdued. A representative for the candidates for governor, Katie Vincentz, stated that Alison Esposito, a candidacy for lieutenant governor, was in the immediate area of the incident but was later deemed safe and unharmed.
After the mugging of Christopher Braugh, an assistant to New York Mayor Eric Adams, crime in New York had already become a heated issue of discussion. At gunpoint, two men robbed Braugh when he was in Brooklyn working on a project for the mayor. This is viewed as a symbol of deteriorating law and order across the state, along with the assault on Lee Zeldin.
Vincentz claims that crime in New York is on the rise, but the data suggest otherwise. While gunshots and homicides have decreased in the state capital by 31% and 9%, respectively, cases of robbery and assault have witnessed a tiny uptick, according to the NYPD.
