The “blackout challenge,” a dangerous TikTok trend that became popular in 2021, had been around at least since 2008.

In the United States, the parents of two young girls who died after taking part in a “blackout challenge” that was popular in 2021 have filed a lawsuit against the video social media website TikTok.

Also, the families of 9-year-old Arriani Jaileen Arroyo and 8-year-old Lalani Erika Walton say that TikTok “deliberately” showed their kids violent videos.

But what is the “Blackout challenge” exactly, and who started it?

Who Started “The Blackout Challenge” On Tiktok?

People says that the “blackout challenge” has been around at least since 2008, but TikTok users didn’t see it again until 2021.

Also, this habit has been discouraged among young users because, according to the CDC, it has caused more than 80 deaths in the past.

In this challenge, people are told to choke themselves until they can’t breathe anymore and pass out. No one knows who started the trend.

Still, an article in The New York Times says that the challenge got a lot of attention from the media after three young children died in Italy in January 2021 while trying to do it. It also said that the source was the website Know Your Meme.

TikTok Is Being Sued By Parents For Following A Dangerous Trend

Insider says that two more lawsuits have been filed in July about the deaths of 9-year-old Arriani Jaileen Arroyo and 8-year-old Lalani Erika Walton.

Also, the cases, which include the TikTok challenge and say that someone died because of someone else’s actions, were sent to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

When they tried the challenges, both kids choked to death and were found hanging. The police looked at Lalani’s phone and tablet and found that she had been watching blackout challenge videos.

In the same way, the Social Media Victims Law Center has complained about the Blackout Challenge on TikTok. It says that there is “no doubt” that the app knew that the challenge was going viral on their app.

Also, TikTok has denied that the challenge, which started as “the choking game” before the app, has anything to do with it.

The #BlackoutChallenge no longer shows up in TikTok’s search results, according to the Washington Post.

What Is The Blackout Challenge About?

People says that the “blackout challenge,” which is also called the “choking challenge” or the “pass-out challenge,” tells people to hold their breath until they pass out from lack of oxygen.

Dr. Nick Flynn said, “What’s really going on in the brain is a lack of oxygen, similar to what happens when someone drowns, suffocates, or has a heart attack.”

“Low oxygen to the brain for more than three minutes can cause brain damage, and low oxygen to the brain for more than five minutes can kill you.”

Unfortunately, this challenge has killed more kids than just Nylah, Lalani, and Arriani.

The Washington Post also says that Nylah’s complaint says that four other kids younger than 14 also died while trying to copy the movies.
