GADSDEN, Ala. – One person is dead after an officer shot him during an altercation Thursday morning, outside of an Alabama elementary school.

According to the Gadsden Times, Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton said a man attempted to enter either Walnut Park Elementary School or the cars in the school parking lot.

A school resource officer confronted the man and an altercation ensued, the sheriff said. The officer, identified as a Rainbow City police officer, called for backup before shooting the man dead.

Gadsden City Schools Superintendent Tony Reddick confirmed that all of the children are safe. Parents are asked to show identification when picking them up.
