After much delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Euphoria is on its way back to our screens.

A trailer for the new season has now been released and shows off some dramatic new scenarios for our favourite characters.

The new episodes come after two special episodes which aired last winter and centred on best friends and former lovers Rue Bennett (Emmy Award winner Zendaya) and Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer)

The first instalment took place almost entirely in a diner with Rue meeting her sponsor Ali (Colman Domingo) to discuss her addiction and the seeming impossibility of sobriety.

The second episode focused instead on Jules as she attended a therapy session – with her therapist played by Looking actress Lauren Weedman.

Towards the end of the episode, it transpires that the session had taken place on Christmas Eve – the same day as Rue’s meeting with Ali – and at the very end we see the pair meet up in Jules’ room.

There it seemed as if  Jules might have the chance to apologise for the train incident in series one, but Rue abruptly left before she had the chance, leaving Jules to break down crying.

So, without further ado, here is when we should expect to catch up with Rue and Jules again.

Euphoria season 2 release date

CONFIRMED: Euphoria season 2 is released on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK on Monday 10th January 2022 from 2am GMT.

This is the same time as the release in the US on HBO Max on January 9, 2022.

The new episodes will then air weekly on Sky Atlantic and on NOW, after which the episodes will be available to watch on-demand.

The episodes will also air at 9pm on Sky Atlantic every Monday for the entirety of its run.

It is believed that the second season will run for eight episodes if it is to match the first run.

The new season was preceded by two special episodes, each focusing on Rue and Jules, which aired in December 2020 and January 2021.

Euphoria season 2 trailer

We now have a musical teaser trailer for the new episodes, which show Rue alive but not particularly well.

All of our favourite characters feature in the teaser, which hints at some drama to come, including Nate, Jules and Fezco.

Will Rue find happiness?

Considering her struggle with drugs and her appearing high in the trailer, it is not looking likely.

The series released a full trailer on Monday 20th December 2021 which gave a great insight into what to expect in the new season.

In addition to Rue being reunited with Jules, we also see her apparently get in danger by handling a gun and getting involved in crime.

Elsewhere, Cassie appears to be struggling and goes on to explore a romance with the toxic Nate. How will Maddy take the news that her ex-boyfriend is now with one of her best friends?

Finally, it looks like Kat may not be as happy in her new relationship as she hoped.

Austin Abrams will also reprise his role as Kat’s love interest Ethan and appears to have been promoted to the regular cast along with young Javon Walton as Ashtray.

Meanwhile, musician Dominic Fike has been cast in a regular role on the show which was teased by the trailer.

Fike described his character as a “homie” of Rue and Jules in an interview with Variety, describing the character as having much in common with himself.

What is Euphoria about?

Euphoria is to Gen-Z what Skins was to Millennials. Both were controversial and both focused on a group of high-schoolers pushing social boundaries.

The series is HBO’s highest rating show for younger audiences, so clearly the hard-hitting drama resonates.

Creator/Director Sam Levinson and producer Drake brought to HBO a teen angst drama based on the Israeli mini-series of the same name.

The dark tale follows a group of teenagers as they face heartbreak, addiction and rage.

The show featured a number of controversial scenes, with its use of nudity described by The Guardian as “pointlessly gratuitous”, but HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys defended the scenes, which he said were based on Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s own experiences.

“It may seem boundary-pushing, and the idea of putting them on TV may be, but somebody lived them,” Bloys told the Hollywood Reporter, adding, “We’re not trying to put out a Gossip Girl.”

What will happen in Euphoria season 2?

Season one ended on an ambiguous note, leaving fans unsure if Rue (Zendaya) have died from an overdose.

However, the trailer assures us she is alive but still struggling with her addiction issues.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Zendaya teased that Rue will hit “rock bottom” in the upcoming episodes, describing it as a “long journey” for the beloved character.

“She makes decisions and does things that are painful not only to herself, but to other people, and we see that fallout over and over and over again,” Zendaya told RadioTimes.com and other press.

“And this season, more specifically, she goes to the rock bottom. When we get midway through, that’s when the rock bottom hits, and that’s where it became extremely painful for all of us to watch. And to portray her going through it hurt me.

“It can be quite painful because your body doesn’t know that it is not real, even if your mind does. And if you really care about the characters, you can internalise the things that they go through.

“You just want them to make the right decision and you want them to be okay. And that’s a painful kind of battle that you have inside, where you have to do something that you wish they wouldn’t do, or say.”

There are also plenty of narrative arcs we can expect to follow into the new season– Nate’s (Jacob Elordi) sexuality, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and McKay’s (Algee Smith) relationship, Gia’s (Storm Reid) growing rebelliousness, Kat (Barbie Ferreira) and Ethan’s (Austin Abrams) future together and whether Kat is still working as a camgirl, and what happened to Jules (Hunter Schafer) after Rue left her on the train.

The trailer seemed to suggest that Cassie and Nate will be spending more time together, whilst teasing Rue getting involved with some dangerous people.

Meanwhile, Gia actress Storm Reid has teased that her “character is supposed to be developing and becoming her own” – suggesting Gia may well get her own standalone episode.

How can I watch the Euphoria special episodes?

Two special “bridge” episodes aired prior to the complete second season, with the first, airing on Sunday 6th December and the second on Sunday 24th January 2021.

For UK viewers, the episodes are available to watch on Sky and NOW TV

The news of the specials was first announced by Zendaya, who posted a close-up image Jules (played by Hunter Schafer), in whose eye we can see a reflection of Zendaya’s character, Rue.

“We really missed them. Two special Euphoria episodes coming soon. First one December 6th on @hbo,” the caption reads.

While in a November Twitter post, Zendaya shared a promo image for the upcoming episodes, captioned: “THIS IS NOT SEASON 2.”
