Money Heist Korea

The home audience has once again criticized the most recent Korean adaptation of the popular Spanish OTT series Money Heist. This time, it was over a contentious moment in the season’s debut episode that reportedly criticizes Japan.

The dialogue in question is from the character Tokyo, who, when questioned why she chose the name of the city Tokyo as her nickname, responds as follows:

We’re going to do something horrible, so…
The audience thought that this discussion made unjustified disparaging remarks against Japan. The remark alludes to a tired joke that the Korean population today considers offensive.

In order to avoid harming South Korea’s reputation, Koreans who did anything improper or disagreeable abroad in the early 2000s pretended to be Japanese. Given the long-standing hostility between the two countries, this action was justifiable.

However, this joke was poorly received by the show’s Korean viewers. The global popularity of the Hallyu wave, which includes Japan, and the increase in Japanese entertainment in the country have given the young people of Korea a greater tolerance and respect for other countries and cultures. They therefore disapproved of the discussion since it denigrated the nation and fueled anti-Japanese feeling.

What uproar did Tokyo from Money Heist: Korea cause?

Tokyo’s origin tale is told at the beginning of Money Heist: Korea. Tokyo is a young North Korean who serves in both the BTS Army and the genuine North Korean army. The Korean War between the two Koreas has ended in the year 2025, and the formerly at war neighbors are now on the verge of unification. Tokyo made the decision to travel to South Korea, the land of dreams, as a result of this diplomatic development.

Her time in South Korea, however, was harder than she had anticipated. She struggles to make ends meet in the capitalist state’s underbelly and eventually becomes connected with a loan shark who tries to take advantage of her.

Tokyo kills the man and forces her escape in order to save both her life and that of another girl. The Professor saves her from the jaws of death and then accepts her into his crew of robbers for the planned heist at the Joint Economic Area mint.

Everyone in the group was instructed to choose a fictitious name in order to forget their past and safeguard their true identities in case things didn’t work out. Although for various reasons, the characters took the names of the cities mentioned in the first Money Heist.

Tokyo responded that Japan had to be involved if she was going to do anything wicked when Rio questioned her about why she chose that moniker. This is a reference to the great animosity that Koreans have toward Japan as a result of that country’s colonization and numerous battles with it.
