Gacy was convicted of sodomizing a young child in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1968 and sentenced to ten years in prison, but only served eighteen months.

He murdered at least thirty additional people after his divorce from his second wife in 1976. He first killed someone in 1972, then twice more by the end of 1975, and at least thirty more by the end of 1976.

After an investigation into the disappearance of Des Plaines teen Robert Priest, Gacy was captured on December 21, 1978.
