In the next episode of People Magazine Investigates, the gruesome hammer killer murder case will be looked at again through the eyes of Vanessa Bennett, who lost her whole family to the case.
The episode called “The Colorado Hammer Killer” is set to air on July 11 at 9:00 PM ET. It will go into detail about the 1984 attacks by the “hammer killer,” also known as Alex Ewing. The People Magazine Investigates episode will also talk about how it took 38 years for Ewing to be found guilty of the murders, bringing justice to the people he killed.
Not until 2018 did the police and the people who had been killed realize that a serial killer was in prison, where he should have been all along. Ewing, who is now 61 years old, is in prison because he was found guilty of killing three members of the Bennett family and Patricia Smith in 2021 and 2022. He faces four consecutive life sentences for each of these killings.

People Magazine Investigates: The Colorado Hammer Killer brutally bludgeoned the Bennetts in 1984
Alex Ewing got into the home of the Bennett family in Aurora, Colorado, through the garage early on January 16, 1984. He sneaked through the house where there were four people living. Bruce, a 27-year-old father, is said to have fought the fanatic who killed him and died while fighting back when the fanatic hit his head with a hammer right before cutting his throat.
Soon after that, Ewing went to see the mother, Debra, who was 26 years old, and their two daughters, Melissa, 7, and Vanessa, 3. He hit them with his hammer after he had sexually assaulted them. The killer broke the youngest Bennett’s jaw, skull, arms, and legs. She was the only one to survive the attack.
Vanessa was found the next morning stuck between her bed and a wall. She was covered in blood and had been hit with a hammer, but she was still alive. The once-happy little girl was left without a family when she was the only person to survive the scary attack.
Bennett talked about her scary experience and how it has affected her in a recent interview with People Magazine:
The victim also said that she had “thought about killing herself a lot,” especially when she was a teenager, and that she had been homeless and used drugs to try to get away from her painful past.
Alex Ewing went on a murderous spree across three states in 1984
In January 1984, Ewing went on a 12-day killing spree in Denver. He attacked four people, three of whom were survivors: Jim and Kim Haubenschild, Donna Holm, and Donna Holm. The only family that couldn’t escape the hammer killer was the Bennetts. A few days before that, Ewing had brutally killed Patricia Smith, who was 50 years old, in Lakewood.
Eleven days after the attacks in Colorado, Ewing continued his violent spree in Arizona by throwing a rock at Roy Williams while he was sleeping at his home in Kingman. In the next attack, on August 9 of the same year in Nevada, he tried to kill Nancy and Chris Barry with an ax handle. He was arrested for attempted murder.
