THE West Midlands was tonight shaken by a terrifying 3.2 magnitude earthquake.
Startled residents in Birmingham and the Black Country reported the phenomenon on social media at 11pm on Monday.
The quake’s epicentre was about 5 kilometres north-west of Birmingham, according to the US Geological Survey.
The epicentre was suggested as being near Walsall, close to the M6 motorway. Residents in Wolverhampton, Dudley and Wednesbury also reported feeling the tremor on social media.
One said: “Earthquake in the West Midlands. Felt in Walsall, Birmingham, Dudley and Wolverhampton.
It has been a crazy week with this as well as 3 storms – very strong winds on Friday and rain like I have never seen before yesterday.”
Another added: “The West Midlands was shaking – literally – just before 11pm. Yep. EARTHQUAKE.
“Birmingham actually just told Storm Franklin to hold its beer.”
Someone else wrote: “Pandemics, Putin and earthquakes. How can I live love laugh in this world??”
The United States Geological Survey said the quake was at a shallow depth of 10km with a tremor size of 3.2.
A resident in Walsall said: “We were just getting into bed and thought there had been a crash or explosion near by.
“Confused by the rumbling we checked in doors and went to make sure all okay outdoors. Five of our neighbours were out there too, quite confused by the whole thing.”
In Willenhall, a resident added: “I was in bed just nodding off to sleep and felt the house shake. I thought it was someone trying to get into the house.”
And in Wednesfield, a local reported: “I was in bed and just heard a thud. The house shook, it felt like a car crashed in to the house.”
