Influential Tory Robert Halfon is among those arguing for a temporary suspension of green levies — which make up 25 per cent of energy bills. He called for “special measures” while international energy prices are skyrocketing.

It comes as a poll showed Mr Johnson could be ousted as PM — and the Tory Party lose 100 seats — if there was an election this week.

The Deltapoll survey revealed only 34 per cent of voters think the PM is doing a good job and he faces losing nearly all of his hard-won Red Wall seats — where the energy crisis will hit home hardest.

Lee Anderson, Tory MP for Ashfield, Notts, said: “No one disagrees we must do more to protect the Earth.

“But mention Net Zero to people in Ashfield and they will look at you as if you have arrived from another planet. Many of them are only just managing to make ends meet.”

The senior Tories have written to the PM warning prices will surge “faster than any other competitive country”.

The cap on energy bills is expected to rise by about £500 in April. The group added the hike will lead “directly into a cost of living crisis for many and push them into what is bluntly called fuel poverty”.

Mr Halfon added: “I have huge worries about the rise in energy costs.

“I strongly believe that, given the price cap is going to go up in the spring, the Government should look at other measures.”

Yesterday, Health Minister Ed Argar said the Government has put in a range of measures to help poorer families.
