She said: ‘It’s so nice now restrictions have lifted. We can actually get close, hug and do proper acting.

It’s two years into our relationship and we’re like, “nice to meet you, how do we do this?” It’s so awkward.’

Meanwhile, creator Heidi Thomas revealed: ‘Something interesting and rather wonderful will happen for Trixie this series. She has big news coming up.’

The series aims to mirror what life was like for the real medical team of Nonnatus House and has been a firm favourite with TV audiences.

The show returned with its 11th earlier this year that was set in the year 1967, but the show creator has since confirmed it will keep going until they’ve reached the next decade.

Speaking to The Mirror, Helen revealed she had spoken with creator Heidi who said she wanted to follow the timeline as the nuns existed until the early 70s.

Heidi’s husband Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Patrick Turner, added: ‘I think historically it has a natural, general timeline. If you stay to a level of historical accuracy, it won’t go on in that form forever, because it didn’t back then.’

Call The Midwives’ 11th season saw Trixie find love with single dad Matthew and will also cover illnesses such as scabies, chickenpox and measles.

The popular medical drama also looked at issues that were prevalent at the time  including mechanic Cyril played by Zephryn Taitte as he struggles to get a white collar job.

Call The Midwife regularly attracts more than 10million viewers making it one of the most successful shows on British TV.

But it has only ever won one Bafta award, the Radio Times Audience Award in 2013, which was voted for by members of the public.
