A BRIT journalist has reportedly been kidnapped by the Taliban along with eight others.
According to Afghanistan’s ex-vice president Amrullah Saleh, former BBC reporter Andrew North is among those the terror group has captured in recent months.
Saleh tweeted: “Due to no media, no reporting by citizens & a suffocating atmosphere corruption, crime & atrocities aren’t well exposed.
“As an example 9 citizens of western countries have been kidnapped amongst them Andrew North of BBC & Peter Juvenal owner of Gandomak Restaurant.”
It’s understood Andrew was working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kabul.
The UN refugee agency said: “Two journalists with UNHCR and Afghan nationals working with them have been detained in Kabul. We are doing our utmost to resolve the situation, in coordination with others.
“We will make no further comment given the nature of the situation.”
Paul Danahar, Foreign Editor of BBC News, said: “Andrew North is working for the UN in Kabul. He is a former colleague and a respected journalist.
“All inquiries about his situation, which his friends and colleagues are obviously concerned about, should be directed to the UN.”
In a recent piece Andrew wrote for New Lines Magazine, he described how the reality of life in Afghanistan is “more complex” than media reports show.
He wrote: “The group once dubbed “Islamic Maoists” has not been quite as ruthless as many feared — so far.”
