A HOMEOWNER says he has been left too scared to leave his house because of speeding cars outside his home.

Graham Earnshaw, 68, claims cars “bombing down the road” have left him depressed and even “suicidal” – and damaging his physical health.

The retired council worker says the break-neck speeds of drivers also mean he can’t walk his dog or even sit in his garden because of the racket.

Graham, from Southampton, Hants., told the Southern Daily Echo: “It makes me suicidal because no one really listens to us and it’s just getting worse and worse.

“I’ve had two strokes so worrying isn’t good for me.”

Northlands Road is meant to be a 30mph zone but cars, motorbikes and lorries charge along it “without caring”, Graham added.

The retiree lives with wife Linda, 68, and despite installing acoustic glass in their bedroom to dampen the sound they still struggle with the noise.

And Linda says she can’t even enjoy her garden because of the racket from the road.

The couple also claim the roads pose a lethal threat to school kids who walk along the roads.

And they’re really worried about elderly residents who live along the racetrack.

She added: “We have no hope whatsoever.”

A spokesperson from the council said: “Southampton City Council undertakes an annual road safety review to identify sites which may require road safety measures.

“We are currently reviewing the most recent years’ data to establish what sites will be part of this road safety programme going forward.

“Historically Northlands Road has not been flagged for this programme but we continue to review all sites and keep engagement with residents.

“Speed surveys along Northlands Road have not shown speeds to be at an intervention level for speed calming.

“While the data highlights that there have been a number of speed limit contraventions, this is unfortunately present on many roads across the country.

“Southampton City Council operate Vehicle Activated speed units across the city. These are rotated between sites over the year to maximise coverage and avoid the units becoming ignored.
