A NEW York City school’s vegan meals were slammed as a girl was served a burrito with cheese.

Gothamist co-creator Jen Chung took to Twitter to share her daughter’s supposed plant-based meal on the week city schools started debuting “Vegan Fridays.”

However, despite NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ plan to offer weekly plant-based meals for free, Chung’s daughter received a non-vegan lunch on Friday.

Chung tweeted on February 4, 2020: “I asked my daughter to report on the first Vegan Friday meal at her NYC public school and she sent me this picture.”

In the photo was a banana and a packaged Cabo Primo Southwestern Style Black Bean and Cheese Burrito — which isn’t vegan.

“She said it was pretty good—but then I made her look at the ingredients and… NOT VEGAN,” Chung added in a follow-up tweet.

The mom continued: “There was another option—black beans, mix of veggies, tomato, and corn—but she said most kids got the packaged burrito.

“Her meal also had a banana and a bag of Tostitos.”

Chung also explained that students uninterested in the burrito or veggie, black bean mix were able to instead order peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or ham sandwiches.

In another photo shared by Chung, a close-up of the burrito’s nutritional information can be seen.

Chung wrote alongside the image: “as if a packaged food from 3000 miles away wasnt bad enough: contains bioengineered food ingredients.”

Not only does the food reveal in bold it contains bioengineered food ingredients, but it also clearly states to include wheat, soy, and milk.

In response to Chung’s story, one Twitter user replied: “I have 2 kids.

“One loved the burrito and ate two when they found out there were extras. The younger one didn’t want the burrito.

“They didn’t eat anything because there wasn’t enough time to finish peeling an *actually vegan* orange. Kids need more time for lunch.”

Another user commented: “My kids had tortilla chips and grilled cheese today.

“Def not vegan or healthy. This reminds me of when Diblasio tried meatless Monday.

“Claimed it was healthy and my kids had chips/Mozzarella sticks every day with a crappy salsa that was not fresh!”

NYC Public Schools tweeted on February 3, 2022: “@NYCschools cafeterias are going vegan on Fridays!

“Plant-based options in schools means healthy eating and healthy living, and improving the quality of life for thousands of NYC students.”

According to Gothamist, Adams — who became a vegan in 2016 — said in a statement earlier this week: “Plant-based options in schools means healthy eating and healthy living, and improving the quality of life for thousands of New York City students.”

Eugenia Gianos, Northwell Health’s Director of Cardiovascular Prevention, said in a statement: “The earlier in life that we can establish healthful eating habits, the better.

“I see our young people struggle with overweight, obesity and even diabetes at younger and younger ages.

“Research shows that plant-based diets help people achieve a healthy weight, so I applaud this positive step.”
