FEW Prime Ministers are ever prepared to confront their own mortality, or admit the deep trouble that they’re in.

Hence promises to go on and on.

But Boris Johnson’s claim that he can win not only the next general election but also the one after that is ludicrous grandstanding, amid the mountain of problems before him

Voters gave him the bluntest message they could in the crushing by-election defeats on Thursday.

In case it’s not got through we’d like to make it even clearer to the PM.

Sort out the mess we are in right now before you start planning for a third term.

Spineless Keir always sits on fence – do we really want him to replace Boris?

PARTY DIVIDED

Boris boasts he’ll be PM until 2030 – but Tory rebels want him gone in weeks

Give your Government a badly-needed sense of vision and purpose based upon a sound Tory ideology.

That should be crystallised in two key principles: cut back the size of the state and cut down on the onerous tax burden.

Voters are drowning in debt, they need help now.

The PM can pay for this by axing ruinous green levies and profligate foreign aid projects.

Focus on the hardships at home rather than funnelling money overseas.

He should also chop VAT on fuel and energy bills and reverse the disastrous National Insurance tax hike.

Reducing taxes and allowing voters to spend more of their hard-earned cash should always be at the heart of Conservative ideology.

Even more so when the nation is in a cost of living crisis.

With a mounting Tory rebellion on his doorstep, Boris Johnson must face the painful reality that time and voters’ patience are fast running out.

Never mind a third term, he needs to focus on lasting this summer.

The real workers

RAIL strikers and their liberal cheerleaders say they are on the side of ordinary workers.

How about the young carer we report on today?

Rail strikes have caused chaos for Britain’s workers[/caption]

The strikes have forced dedicated Tally Birchall to get up at 3am and walk five miles to put in 12-hour shifts at work.

For this she earns just £18,000 a year, less than a third of the average train driver’s pay.

Do well-heeled union barons and middle-class virtue-signallers on picket lines understand the havoc they are wreaking on low-paid key workers?

They should hang their heads in shame.

So we welcome tougher sentences that mean those who cause or allow a child’s death will face life rather than a maximum 14 years.
