MPs on basic salaries of £82,000 can feast on fresh fish dishes for as little as £3.73 and apple crumble and custard for 98p.

Yet the cheap eats have not stopped politicians and staff from bleating in complaints logged by Commons officials.

They have grumbled about how “salads are getting smaller” and “are not value for money”.

One muttered about a lack of poached eggs and English mustard, while others quibbled over weak coffee and demanded the removal of onions from a popular dish, transparency papers show.

Other moans between October and March were received over creamless-scones, a lack of “traditional menu items” and concerns about “the number of spicy dishes”.

The cost of running bars and canteens hit a record £9.1million in 2021, despite Covid-hit sales of just £827,000.

Duncan Simpson, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Families finding it hard to put food on the table are still paying to subsidise pints and meals in parliament.

“Perhaps politicians could appreciate this before complaining.”

MPs also complained about a lack of USB charging points and dirty toilets.

A House of Commons spokesman said: “Where cleaning issues are identified, we act quickly to address them.

“Our food and drink offering is regularly benchmarked against similar outlets and we continuously seek to reduce costs.”
