The new figures came as the state’s Liquor and Gambling Commissioner imposed restrictions on the sale of alcohol in Port Augusta in response to police reports of increased anti-social behaviour, partly attributed to COVID-19 lockdowns.

‘Lockdowns in remote communities, coupled with extreme weather blocking highways to the north and west of Port Augusta has resulted in an increased population of non-residents unable to return home,’ the commissioner said in a statement.

Under the restrictions, bottle shops are not permitted to open for trade before 11am and customers will be limited to purchasing one bottle of spirits or one two-litre cask of wine or one bottle of fortified wine.

Photo identification will be required for all purchases and details will be recorded in a register.

The measures took effect at midday on Tuesday and will remain in place for two weeks.
