SNOW is set to hit Britain tomorrow and may fall as far south as LONDON as an icy plunge sets in.

Temperatures are set to plummet across the UK this week with potential for the white stuff to fall over the capital on Wednesday night.

The Met Office has already issued a weather warning for snow and ice in Scotland tonight

The Met Office has already issued a yellow weather warning in Scotland for tonight, with wintry showers expected to turn into snow and hail in the early hours tomorrow morning.

Up to 5cm of the white stuff is set to fall on high ground – with up to three centimetres possible in and around London.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates told The Sun Online: “There’s certainly the potential for [snow over London].

“Late Wednesday evening, early Thursday morning will be the most likely time.

“We’ve got a cold front coming down from the north which is introducing much colder conditions to all parts of the UK by Thursday and as that cold air interacts with the precipitation on this front there’s potential there for some snow to develop.”

Snow is unlikely to settle in the centre of London although higher ground around the city “may see two or three centimetres, maybe some more,” according to Mr Keates.

The meteorologist added: “Essentially it will feel like winter for a few days. It’s going to be a shock to the system.

“As the cold front comes further south tomorrow evening into tomorrow morning that’s where anywhere from mid wales across to south east England, particularly in the higher ground, are at risk of seeing some snow.

“The ice is probably the bigger hazard in all this. Either way it’s going to be cold – it’s going to feel like we’ve taken a step back into the winter rather than stepping forward into April.”

Coastal areas, higher ground in from the coast could see a little bit of snow, not huge amounts, but overnight there could be a few centimetres.

It’s also likely a warning will be issued for northern and eastern Britain on Wednesday morning.

It comes after last week’s scorcher saw the mercury soar to 21C, with Brits basking in the sun.

Temperatures have already started to drop for most, with the trend continuing on Tuesday.

It will be a cloudy day for many while a band of rain moving southwards from the north of Scotland will spark a change to much colder climes.

Maximum temperatures are likely to drop to single figures in many places, with some freezing temperatures expected overnight.

That unsettled theme will continue through to the weekend, with some further rain for some areas on Thursday, before showers on Friday.
