IT was a posh pud in the Seventies and now Neapolitan ice cream is making a comeback.
The treat with the three classic stripes is polling high among consumer favourites, with internet searches up 200 per cent.
Traditionally made in one block separated into three flavours – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – it can be purse-friendly too.
Laura Stott samples different Neapolitan-style tubs for taste and value and rates each out of five.
★★★☆☆
Sainsbury’s, £1.80, 2L: Great family-size tub for a week-night treat.
Pink is a bit paler than some others but with no bearing on taste.
Quality ice cream with nice and creamy flavour and easy to scoop
Perfect for cones. Good-value crowd pleaser.
★★☆☆☆
Tesco, £1, 1L: Served in a posh paper packet, so easily cut into neat helpings.
But the ice cream is quite watery.

No real flavour in the strawberry.
Looks fab though, especially the bold berry colour.
★★★★★
Gianni’s, £1.19, 2L, Aldi: My favourite. Delicious and milky, especially the strawberry and vanilla.
So moreish that both adults and kids will find it hard to resist.
Perfect budget family pud, tastes far pricier than it is. Yum.
★★★★☆
Lidl, £1.45, 2L: Excellent all-rounder for taste and price.
Creamy vanilla is my favourite here, while the chocolate and strawberry are both on the sweet side but still enjoyable.
Easy to scoop, good one to swirl into cones.
★★☆☆☆
Wall’s, £2, 1.8L: A twist on tradition – strawberry and vanilla ice cream with a green stripe added. Good quality.
Firm in the bowl but melts in the mouth without causing a brain freeze.
Pricey, though, for a 1.8L tub.
★★★★☆
Morrisons, £1.59, 2L: With its no-frills packing, this doesn’t look very exciting.
But the ice cream is deliciously creamy – far more so than you expect at this price.
Only downside is that it takes a while to thaw after freezing.
★★★☆☆
Asda, £1.50, 2L: Great bang for your buck.
Flavours are not bad for the price but could be more intense – the chocolate is best.
Takes a while to soften after freezing. But top value.
Add sprinkles or sauce for extra fun.
★★★☆☆
Iceland, £1.70, 2L: Decent flavours but a bit pricier than some rivals.
The chocolate impresses with a rich cocoa taste.
The creamy vanilla also tastes like the real deal, although the strawberry fails to match up that well.
