Who is Oklahoma Congressional candidate Abby Broyles?

Born on November 2, 1989, Abby Broyles is an Oklahoma native and former local news anchor.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from California Baptist University, followed by a juris doctorate from Oklahoma City University School of Law.

Throughout her career, Broyles worked for a series of local news stations before launching Grit for Democracy in December of 2020.

After running for the US Senate as a Democratic nominee in 2020, Broyles announced her run for the Oklahoma House of Representatives the following year.

“Bethany is my hometown,” Broyles said in a statement at the time of her official announcement.

“I walked into that town hall as a constituent and walked out a candidate.”

What are the allegations against Abby Broyles?

In February of 2022, multiple parents have come forward following a Valentine’s Day party and sleepover held for multiple pre-teens.

As a friend of the host, Broyles was invited to the event to celebrate.

Multiple parents of some of the middle schoolers at the party alleged Broyles began drinking wine and later became aggressive with the girls.

They also alleged Broyles insulted the girls with profanities and vomited into a hamper and onto a child’s shoes.

“It was like an attack,” said one of the mothers of a girl at the event, Sarah Matthews, to KFOR.

“Like personal, vicious attacks.”

“Mama Bear starts coming out because you’re like, this is disgusting,” Matthews continued.

“[My daughter] proceeded to tell me that Abby Broyles had been at the house and was very drunk and calling them all mfer’s, f’er this f’er that,” Matthews alleges.

She continued: “[Broyles] called somebody acne f’er, somebody Hispanic f’er, called my daughter judgey f’er for not wanting to sleep with a blanket that she cleaned up wine with.”

“You don’t speak to any human that way, let alone a little girl who’s 12 to 13,” Matthews added.

“That can really change how a little girl views herself for the rest of her life.”

What has Abby Broyles said in response to the allegations?

Following the allegations, Abby Broyles spoke with Kevin Ogle of her old news station, KFOR in Oklahoma.

“She asked me to come over,” Broyles began, referring to the party host.

“She asked me to bring some wine. We had wine and sushi and a couple of hours later, we were upstairs in their theater room watching a movie.”

Broyles continued: “For years I have struggled with stress and anxiety and insomnia… And she gave me a medication I had never taken before. And I had an adverse reaction. Instead of helping me sleep, I hallucinated.

“And I don’t remember anything until I woke up or came to, and I was throwing up in a hamper,” she said.

“I remember starting to hallucinate, and the rest is just blurry,” Broyles added.

“I just remember opening my eyes, and I had gotten sick in this hamper and I didn’t know where I was. It was the most awful experience that I’ve had.”

The former US Congress candidate went on to apologize publicly to the families, saying: “First of all, I want to apologize to the families again, and for people who say I just blacked out and I’m making this up, you don’t know me.

“I want to say sorry from the bottom of my heart, I apologize for any hurt or damage or trauma that my behavior, when I didn’t know what I was doing, caused,” she continued.

“I’m deeply sorry.”

On March 24, 2022, it was announced that Broyles officially ended her campaign for congress.

She took to Twitter to announce the end of her campaign and share a link to an article on Medium that she wrote.

Broyles revealed that she has “struggled with mental health issues including self-worth, severe anxiety, and insomnia” for the last 20 years.

“I don’t know what the journey ahead for me looks like, but I’m grateful to be alive with a fighting spirit and keep my promise — I’m not done yet,” she wrote.
