Born on December 30, 1947, Janet Mills is a native of Maine.
She grew up in Farmington, where she graduated high school in 1965.
After receiving her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts: Boston, Janet earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Maine in 1976.
While studying law, she interned in Washington DC with Charles Morgan Jr, a former civil rights attorney.
When did Janet Mills become a politician?
Between 1976 and 1980, Janet Mills served as the first female criminal prosecutor in Maine as an Assistant Attorney General.
Janet continued to break barriers by becoming the first woman district attorney in all of New England – serving as the DA in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties until 1995.
She co-founded the Maine Women’s Lobby to advocate for abuse survivors.
Elected in 2002 to the Maine House of Representatives, Janet served until her 2009 induction as the 55th Attorney General of Maine.

Janet Mills married Stan Kuklinski in 1985.
He was a widower with five daughters from his previous marriage, whom Janet raised as her own back in Maine.
In 2014, Stan passed away in the aftermath of a stroke.
