SHERYL Sandberg is stepping down as COO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, a position she’s held for fourteen years.

The move comes seven years after the death of her husband, Dave Goldberg.

Who is Sheryl Sandberg?

Sheryl Sandberg has worked for Facebook alongside founder Mark Zuckerberg since 2008 after spending four years working for Google.

She helped build the company to become one of the most user-friendly search engines and helped turn Facebook into one of the most profitable social networks alongside Zuckerberg, who was just 23 years old at the time.

Sandberg has advocated for women’s rights and wrote her best-selling book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will To Lead, in 2013 which encouraged women to advocate for themselves in the workplace.

In addition to her advocacy for women’s rights, Sandberg founded the Learning to Give foundation which educates youth on how to get involved in philanthropic organizations.

The foundation’s mission is to “help youth develop generosity and agency for their ongoing roles in the community.”

Now that she has decided to step down from her position at Meta, Sandberg says she will not only focus on her philanthropic endeavors but she will also get remarried to marketing executive, Tom Bernthal, The Washington Post reported.

She wrote on her Facebook page on June 1, 2022, “When I took this job in 2008, I hoped I would be in this role for five years. Fourteen years later, it is time for me to write the next chapter of my life.”

Sandberg is moving on to the next stage of her life and continued to write that she is “not entirely sure what the future will bring,” adding, “I have learned no one ever is.”

Who was Sheryl Sandberg’s late husband?

Sandberg’s late husband Dave Goldberg was the chief executive of SurveyMonkey and husband before his untimely death in 2015.

Goldberg grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his mother who worked as a teacher, and his younger brother.

Growing up with his mother taught Goldberg invaluable life lessons as he and his brother helped her file papers for a nonprofit organization she started for parents with disabled children.

Speaking about the experience in an op-ed piece in the New York Times in 2012, Goldberg said, “For a long time I didn’t realize that although my mother is in the nonprofit sector, she’s an entrepreneur,” adding, “Her second career influenced the direction my life took.”

Goldberg left home to attend Harvard University where he graduated with a degree in history and government.

In his junior year, he worked on Michael Dukakis’s 1988 presidential campaign but said it taught him that politics was not where his interests lay.

After graduation, Goldberg got a job with Capitol Records but said he believed he was only hired “because (the company) recognized that music was (his) passion.”

In 2009, Goldberg was hired to join SurveyMonkey, a company that created a survey tool that allows users to create and analyze survey data.

He believed that working as an entrepreneur for the company would give him a sense of accomplishment.

“I may no longer be that 26-year-old who started an online music site, but I’m still interested in starting small on something that can make an impact, and I still believe in the triumph of hope over experience.

“That’s what being an entrepreneur means,” Goldberg wrote.

How did Dave Goldberg die?

Goldberg died of head trauma while on vacation in Mexico on May 1, 2015.

According to reports, Goldberg left his room at about 4pm to go to the gym and suffered a heart attack while on the treadmill.

He collapsed, prompting him to hit his head and suffer from substantial blood loss, a Mexican government official told the New York Times.

The spokesman said it appeared “he fell off the treadmill and cracked his head open.”

Goldberg’s brother, Robert, was the one to find him after he hadn’t returned from the gym.

Reports of his death say Goldberg was alive when Robert found him but died at the hospital from severe head trauma and loss of blood.

Sandberg told People that after her husband died, she was filled with grief and in the midst of writing her book, Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy.

She told the outlet, “One of the most important things that happened to me was in the midst of really the depths of grief, Adam said to me one day, ‘You know it could be way worse.’”

“I was like, ‘It could be way worse? Are you kidding me?’ He said, ‘Yeah. Dave could have had that cardiac arrhythmia driving your children.’

“And in that moment I was like, ‘Oh my God, I could’ve lost all three of them and been alone.’

“And I just felt gratitude.”
