SENNHEISER is one of the top names when it comes to headphones and after trying the new Momentum True Wireless 3 earbuds it’s easy to see why.

The German firm has upgraded its popular wireless audio, very much focusing on evolution rather than revolution.

I haven’t tried the previous Momentum True Wireless 2 buds so I can’t compare on experience, but the spec sheet does reveal some decent tech beefing up.

My main point of comparison will be against my trusty Beats Powerbeats Pro earbuds that I’ve been using religiously for about three years now – which I absolutely love and never leave the house without.

But after taking a pair of Momentum True Wireless 3s for a spin, it might be time to move on.

BEST BUDS

The best earbuds you can buy in 2022

Here’s why.

Dinky design

First off, Sennheiser‘s Momentum True Wireless 3 earbuds are pretty dinky and seem to be a bit smaller than its predecessor.

My first concern about any wireless earbuds that are small is that they’re going to fall out of my ears easily.

But no, I’m pleased to say they are actually very secure, even when moving about in the gym.

It’s thanks to a silicon ear wing that grips nice and tight within the ear.

I did find they made my ear a little bit achey after about 30 mins, but changing the bud size helped.

It comes in a really lovely fabric case, which looks just like the previous one.

It’s the ideal size to fit in my pocket – unlike my current Powerbeats Pros which are too big.

One of the upgrades Sennheiser has made is adding wireless charging to the case.

It’s a nice bonus rather than a must-have.

Sounding out

I was blown away by the sound quality of these little earbuds.

They pack so much punch and the ability to customise the sound to your taste makes it all the better.

Using the app, you can crank up the base and other options in a way that makes your tunes burst with power, without dominating any vocals as base can sometimes do.

This went even wilder with the base boost option, which made some dance classics feel like a full blown party in my head.

Though I really need to be careful with turning up the volume too high for the sake of my hearing, it’s good to know the sound can really be cranked up as well.

Coupled with the tight fit from the ear wing and perfect sized bud tips, noise cancelling is really strong too.

I always use the nasty screeching of London Underground to test things in this department, and I’m pleased to say it blocked everything out, keeping me locked in my own little music world.

The earbuds charge super quickly

Performance is spot on

It’s great that you’re able to customise the touch controls via the app, though I’m quite satisfied with how they’re set by default.

Speaking of the controls, the sensitivity balance seems spot on, so it adequately detects any taps you make with your finger to pause, skip a track or adjust the volume.

And on the all important battery front, you can get a good seven hours of use out of the earbuds from a single charge.

The case supports USB-C and will power things up again pretty quickly.

In fact, at one point the battery ran out and I put the earbuds back in for only about five minutes and was able to get 25 minutes of listening out of them on the Tube without any issues.

I had zero issues with the Bluetooth connection while listening to music, which is ideal.

But I did have some infrequent problems of music blasting out of my phone when I had just connected the earbuds, which never happened with my Powerbeats Pros.

You get what you pay for

At £219.99 a pop, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 aren’t exactly cheap.

But you really get a fantastic audio experience, proving that you really do get what you pay for.

The Sun says: The quality and power of these small beasts have made me want to ditch my longstanding favourite audio device, that’s how much I rate the sound and overall quality.

And for anyone who is put off by the price, maybe you could go for the previous Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2?

John Lewis has some left going for a cut price.
